Uses of Dextac 30

Dextac 30 is used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (acid reflux) and peptic ulcer disease.

How does Dextac 30 work?

Dextac 30 works by reducing stomach acid, and relieving acid-related symptoms like indigestion and heartburn.

Side Effects of Dextac 30

Common side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and flatulence.

• Take Dextac 30 one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning.
• It provides long-lasting relief and is well-tolerated.
• Avoid late-night eating and bedtime snacks.
• Inform your doctor if you experience persistent symptoms or no improvement after 14 days of treatment.
• Long-term use may increase the risk of weak bones and mineral deficiencies. Discuss preventive measures like calcium and magnesium supplements with your doctor.

What to Do If You Forget a Dose:

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Pharmacology

Dexlansoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), works by specifically inhibiting the (H+/K+)-ATPase in the gastric parietal cell, suppressing gastric acid secretion. It is available in a dual delayed-release (DDR) formulation for oral administration.

Dosage & Administration of Dextac 30

• The recommended dosage varies based on the indication. For healing of erosive esophagitis, the usual dose is 60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks, while for maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis and relief of heartburn, it is 30 mg once daily. Symptomatic non-erosive GERD is typically treated with 30 mg once daily for 4 weeks.
• There have been no reports of significant overdose with dexlansoprazole.

Administration:

Dexlansoprazole can be taken with or without food. Alternatively, the capsules can be opened and the intact granules sprinkled on a tablespoon and swallowed immediately, without chewing.

Interaction

Dexlansoprazole may interact with certain medications such as atazanavir, warfarin, tacrolimus, clopidogrel, and methotrexate.

Contraindications

It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any formulation component.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Dexlansoprazole is classified as Pregnancy Category B, and there is limited data on its use during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

• Special precautions are advised for gastric malignancy, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, bone fracture, hypomagnesemia, and concomitant use with methotrexate.
• Safety and effectiveness in children below 12 years of age have not been established.
• No dose adjustment is necessary for elderly patients or those with renal impairment.
• However, a maximum daily dose of 30 mg should be considered for patients with moderate hepatic impairment.
